Dr. Lamprey taught in the Computer Information Systems Department at Georgia State University from 1974 to 1985. He then moved on to Valdosta State University, where he taught computer science until his retirement in 2000. After this official retirement and up until 2008, he taught computer-science classes on a part-time basis for the Department of Computer Science at North Georgia College in Dahlonega. (Actually, at that time, it was the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.) He now lives in the Atlanta area with his first wife, Patti, and his hiking buddies, Dodge [pronounced DOJ] and Junior, two golden retrievers. He also engages in industrial training, consulting, and writing. He has done a great deal of volunteer work over the past several years, including working with dog rescue (particularly golden retrievers), helping run a weekly bingo game at a local nursing home, mentoring and tutoring children at local middle and elementary schools, occasionally reading to young children at a daycare center for disadvantaged children, and participating in adopt-a-road and adopt-a-stream projects. He also originated and was deeply involved in an educational project completed in 2012 that teaches people how to identify different kinds of trees. It involved the placement of signs on trees in a local park and the creation of a printed field guide to accompany the signs. He plays the horn in the Alpharetta City Band, the Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra, and the Sounds of Sawnee Community Band. He also plays horn in the Atlanta Horn Club and is a member of AlphaBrass, a brass quintet that performs at weddings, parties, church groups, and senior centers. He loves to sing barbershop, and, for many years (until 2017), he was the baritone in Sentimental Journey, a performing barbershop quartet that had an active performance schedule in the Atlanta area. He ran in the Peachtree Road Race in 2004 and 2005, but, in each case, he was edged out by some Kenyans (not to mention tens of thousands of other folks). He has two adult daughters, Teri and Sarah, (both) of whom he is extremely proud. Teri married Bret Williams in 2005, and Bret is definitely his favorite son in law. Teri and Bret have two superb kids, a boy, Caulder (2007), and a girl, Rylen (2010). Dr. Lamprey may be reached by e-mail at roger@rogerlamprey.com or rlamprey@valdosta.edu. |
